Zipper Tips, Cleaning and TroubleshootingUpdated 16 days ago

Boogie Waterproof Zip Care Guide

The waterproof zip is a critical component of your Boogie. With proper care, it will last the lifetime of the device. The most important precaution is to avoid getting sand in the zipper teeth. Sand can cause wear, prevent proper sealing, and make the zip difficult to operate. Avoid opening or closing the zip on the beach whenever possible.

Best Practices

  • Use silicone lubricant regularly.

  • Operate the slider gently. Pull it straight along the direction of the closure. Ensure the Boogie’s shell is flat—pulling at an angle increases resistance and wear.

  • Never force the zip apart at the ends.

  • Do not fold or crush the zipper. Always store it flat.

  • Check that the antenna isn’t caught in the zip when closing.

  • Store the zip in the closed position. Leaving it open can deform the sealing surfaces, making closure difficult.

  • If you the zipper doesn't close properly, it is better to leave the zip open, than closed with deformed teeth until it is fixed, see below.

  • Avoid heat. Do not store the Boogie in hot cars, garages, or sheds.

  • Inspect the seal before use. Check that all teeth are fully engaged. Any gap or misalignment can cause zip failure, risking water ingress and electronic damage.

  • Check for damage. When open, inspect the zip rubber for nicks or tears.

Sand Prevention

  • Install the clean battery in the car park—not on the sand.

  • Use a trolley to transport the Boogie to and from the water.

  • Rinse thoroughly with fresh water before opening the zip.

  • Dry with a clean towel before opening.

  • Do not store the tow rope inside the Boogie.

Lubrication

  • Apply plenty of silicone grease every second session.

  • Grease the external rubber surfaces of the closed zip and lightly on the teeth.

  • Use 100% clear silicone grease to avoid staining.

  • Where to buy:

Cleaning the Zipper

  • Blow out grit using compressed air.

  • Inspect each tooth for trapped sand.

  • Clean with a toothbrush and mild detergent if necessary.

Fixing a Stiff or Damaged Zipper

If the zip has been exposed to sand or left open for too long:

  1. Clean thoroughly to remove grit.

  2. Lubricate generously.

  3. Use a flat object (e.g., a plastic chopping board) inside the Boogie to help press the zipper flat while closing.

  4. Be patient. Once fully closed and seated, the zipper’s shape may recover, making future closures easier.

Still difficult?

Use specialized pincer pliers to gently squeeze the base of the metal zipper slider. Standard pliers won’t work.  Bunnings link here

  • With the zipper open gently squeeze the base of the zipper slider.

  • With the zipper open massage, bend and twist the problem part of the zip, this will help straighten and align the teeth.

  • After squeezing the the slider, gently close the zipper.

  • If the teeth do not mesh, re open the zip then massage the zipper some more.

  • If the zipper teeth still do not mesh, do not leave the the zipper closed as this will further deform the teeth.

  • The most common place for this to happen is in the last few centimeters of the zip, which is usually due to the zip not being fully closed.

  • Contact support if issues persist. Do not use the Boogie if the zip doesn’t close fully or has visible gaps.
